These can appear as a nicely-printed form in your snail-mail: they look plausible enough that some people pay them without checking, thinking they are routine renewals. It will be an actual company that takes the money, usually many times the usual price, but they may or may not give any service in return. In the worst case, they transfer your domain to themselves and won’t respond to any requests for changes.
